In the universe, why are there no eyes or ears, no hands or feet? Outside of this world, there is nothing to see or hear, nothing to eat, and nothing to protect oneself from. This world was created as a self-sufficient whole, where nothing enters or leaves.
The movement given to that world was the most similar to a circular motion, which is closest to intelligence and wisdom. The world was freed from the other six movements and rotates within itself in the same place.
Dialogue Text
Timaios (Continued) And the god, for various reasons, smoothed and rounded the entire outer surface of the world. First, there was nothing remaining outside the world that required sight, so it had no need to have eyes. Nor did it require ears, because there was nothing outside to be heard. Furthermore, there was no air surrounding it that would necessitate breathing. Moreover, it needed no organs for taking in something and incorporating it as nourishment, nor for expelling what has lost its moisture back outwards.
Timaios (Continued). In reality, nothing ever left the world, nor did anything enter it from elsewhere. This was because absolutely nothing came from outside. The world itself, through its own technology, created everything within itself, consuming and being consumed by itself. Those who assembled it believed that a self-sufficient world was superior to one that required external elements. Therefore, they did not attach hands unnecessarily for grasping or defending against anything. Similarly, legs or other organs for walking were not attached.
Timaios (Continued) God gave the body its own kind of movement, which is the one closest to intellect and wisdom. Therefore, God made the world rotate within itself, remaining in the same place and with the same characteristics, performing a circular motion. He removed all the other six kinds of movements and freed it from their disturbances. Since this rotational movement requires no feet at all, God created the world as something without feet, incapable of walking.
